LOPRESTI: As TV money explodes, give fans a discount Topix position 6
Here's an idea. And yes, I'll be glad to take a breathalyzer test after you're finished ridiculing it.Cut the ticket prices to Major League Baseball games. Even when the New York Yankees come to town.Yeah, yeah. Dumbest idea since Gisele Bundchen decided to start analyzing New England receivers, at least to the owners, who'd rather chew on a pine tar rag. But please, allow an explanation. The news from baseball is that some teams are making money batting glove over fist on local television packages. The accountants are doing the wave. That's one reason why the hot stove league gushed with cold cash, even though the Boston Red Sox and Yankees - for whom the free agent market is almost always like Black Friday - weren't even elbowing aside other shoppers for all the deals. But take the Los Angeles Angels of Anabucks. They're rolling in more dough than a donut maker, thanks to local TV. Albert Pujols' $240 million road to Angel Stadium ran through Fox Sports West. The texas rangers have gone from bankruptcy to paying $100 million-plus for an imported Japanese pitcher who has thrown as many major league innings as your butcher. They didn't get that much discretionary spending money selling old Nolan Ryan baseball cards.Local TV is turning into an ATM machine. A cash cow with commercials, and it could be mooing in your neighborhood soon, if not already. A change to the landscape, say the bean counters, and the gravy train won't stop in only Boston or the Bronx. So if the teams are raking in the TV dollars like a winning poker pot, why shouldn't the poor slob up in row 23 of the grandstand catch a break?Nothing like being there, but in an age where the budget is all about the television audience, you have to have empathy for the folks with the quaint idea of actually showing up to pay to watch the game from the not-all-that-cheap seats. They seem to be dropping down the standings faster than the Houston Astros - below cable customers, digital viewers, television dish owners, and anyone else with a remote control.Consider their plight.Bad traffic, expensive parking, long concession stand vigils and having to deal with the occasional knucklehead in the stands. They get rained out, snowed on, lined up and shaken down.Television cares nothing about their lives or their plans. Move game starts to a later screwball time to accommodate a better broadcast window? No problem, and who cares if the guy who stood in line for his bleacher seats has to work and now can't go? Someone else can fill in for the studio audience. And those cold postseason games at night, for prime time, with not even daylight to warm the huddled masses? Frostbite is a small price to pay for better ratings.Fair enough. Television makes the music and always will. But if teams are going to hit the lottery on local TV contracts, it'd be a fine time to discount the ticket price for the paying stiffs. This summer, the public might need the spare change to buy gas to get to the ballpark.Another thing. schedule a couple of real, live doubleheaders. And not any of those day-night gimmicks to squeeze in two gates, but old-fashioned, let's-play-two twinbills. People used to love 'em.The lost revenue? Just peel a few $10s and $20s off the TV wad. Curious thing about spectator sports, where everyone makes money. The live spectators are the only people who never get to negotiate a new contract.
