The dating game: More couples turn to online matchmaking Topix position 5
Four years and several rather tepid dates after her broken engagement in 2002, Amber Campsen had to concede relationship defeat. At 29, the plan of 'meeting someone in college, being married right out of college, having children and being finished with the white picket fence at 25 or 26' just wasn't panning out.So, she took the plan into her own hands, or rather to her own keyboard, and signed up for Match.com.'I had always thought it was something I would never do, just because on the Internet you're not sure who you'll meet or what it will involve,' says Amber, now 32.But a friend goaded her with stories of success and so, 'I said, OK, I'll give it a shot. What's the worst thing that can happen? You don't meet anybody and that's not the plan that God has for you and you just move on.'But she didn't have to move on. Less than two months later, she met Bo McDonald, a 27-year-old radio personality in Greenville, S.C. Now, she's Amber McDonald, and her own success story is the one she enjoys telling.Like Amber and Bo, other singles are seeking help with finding someone to date. Often -- although not always -- they find that help online. And it's not just the young professional set clicking for love. Those in their 40s, 50s and 60s are increasingly turning to online dating as well. It's not so easy to meet people today, says Whitney Casey, a relationship expert with Match.com and author of 'The Man Plan.' A Match.com survey of 11,000 people showed one of every five new committed relationships and one of every six new marriages were between people who met through an online dating site.Experts give several reasons why it's harder now to find long-term compatibility. For one, the average age for marriage has risen since the days when most tied the knot right out of high school or college. Today, it's 28 for men and 26 for women, according to Pew ResearchCenter.Young people are not rushing to marry, and, in fact, many are not marrying at all. From 1970 to 2010, the marriage rate declined by more than 50 percent, according to a report by The National Marriage Project. Also, an ever more transient society is taking people away from familiar connections that broaden the dating pool.'We're buying christmas presents, buying music, these are intimate things that people are doing online,' Casey says. 'So communicating with another person online in hopes of going on a date is not as out there' as it may seem. With the growth of online dating, attitudes are changing, too. Bo McDonald used to scoff at the idea.'I always thought it was for people that liked 'Star Trek' and lived in their parents' basement,' he deadpans. But now, he's says, 'it's for anyone.'The dating market today is tough. Although we are more connected in some ways, changing social norms have meant changing the way we meet people, says Ingrid Sthare, founder of Together Dating, a matchmaking service in Greenville and a branch of the national eLove. Most of us no longer live in the same town we grew up in, she says, and we don't necessarily meet our future spouse in college. Such transience and a greater focus on careers among both men and women mean many remain single into their 30s.'So what happens is they turn around at 30 and they say, oh my gosh, I've got to get serious about my personal life,' Sthare says. 'And then it's, oh my gosh, where am I going to go to meet somebody?'Sometimes, people don't face that reality until 40 or 50. Matchmaking and online dating services are appealing to a new demographic of daters: those starting a new phase of their lives. In fact, Match.com's largest demographic is those ages 30-49, and the site's fastest growing demographic is people 65 and older.Together Dating's Sthare has seen increased interest from those in their 50s, 60s and 70s as well. She attributes the growth to several factors. Many in the older demographics have been married before, often to high school and college sweethearts, have kids, and now in middle age have realized the marriage isn't working. And so, they are thrust into the dating world again only to find it's a little different.'We see clients who have been widowed or divorced and the whole dating world has changed so drastically since they were out there,' Sthare says. 'I think it's very haunting for them, so I think that's why they want that additional help as well.'For many who meet online, just as for those who meet other ways, there is still a sense of mystique, but perhaps not a sense of fate. And really, says Match.com's Casey, the old-fashioned notion of fairy-tale love isn't really relevant anymore. It's not the most romantic notion, but Prince Charming may be hung up on a conference call or on a business trip, so sometimes you have to try at love.'People need to re-frame this white horse,' Casey says of the fairy-tale ideal. 'I mean who comes on a white horse anymore? I'd rather he send an emoticon white horse in a text message saying, I'm not going to be your white horse but I could be a great date.'
