Good Monday Morning: Prunedale singer seeks donations for country album

A Prunedale singer-
songwriter is seeking donations to make her dream come true. Angelina Rose needs $12,000 to produce her debut country music album, and she has until March 31 to do it.Everything is in place for the project except the money. She has the talent, the
songs and a well-known Nashville producer. The North Monterey County
high school graduate is taking donations through her website on Kickstarter Inc., an online fundraising site.Rose will be giving back something for your donations. For instance, those who donate $5 will receive a free download of her album, tentatively titled 'Ride on Your Horses.' $10 donors will get an autographed CD, while $20 donors will receive an autographed 5 x 7 photo of her. The first person to donate $1,000 will receive Rose's Ibanez acoustic-electric guitar autographed by her.Rose, 36, has been writing
songs for many years. She found her voice as a young girl singing in church. First she sang rhythm and blues but found her heart was in country music. With the help of her fiance, Shawn Papps, she recorded a
song and sent it to producer Gary Carter in Nashville. Carter has worked with such artists as Faith, Hill, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson and Randy Travis. He liked the
song and encouraged her to find a way to make her album a reality.'I'm just trying to fund the album and promote it,' she said. 'The encouragement from his belief in me, his support, his words, it's encouraging and motivating.'Rose and Papps found Kickstarter Inc. online. They submitted their fundraising proposal, it was approved and another door swung open. On the Kickstarter website you can listen to part of one of her recorded
songs, 'I'd Do It
all Again.' It's upbeat, hopeful and country with a capital 'C.'Rose hasn't been to Nashville yet, but hopes to once she's raised the money for her album. For now she records her
songs here and sends them via the Internet to Carter who makes suggestions to improve them.'He (Carter) knows me and he knows what suits me best voc
ally and music
ally ... ,' she said. 'It's re
ally important for people to know that ... I'm a spiritual singer. I sing from my heart.'Rose is a country girl at heart, too. One of eight children, she spent her early years growing up on her father's 647-acre ranch near Fort Hunter-Liggett, riding horses and singing to them as she rode. She also wandered the ranch with a boom box listening to the music of Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson.'The great thing about country music is it's still is very accepting and very wholesome,' she said.In years past, Rose, a guitarist and pianist, pursued a career singing rhythm and blues. She even recorded with the late Whitney Houston's producer in Los Angeles. While that goal didn't materialize, she continued her
musical interests. She got a break in 2003 when, through a
high school friend, she landed a job writing
lyrics and singing for a Sony Play Station 2 game.'After I did the game, I loved it so much I thought, 'This is another side of music I'd never thought of,' ' she said. That stimulated her interest in writing more
songs. Some tough times lay ahead, though. She went through unemployment, part-time work and battled some health issues in her early 30s. She even sold her instruments to make ends meet. Along the way she did vocal demo work in both Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area as well as continuing to write
songs.During her pursuit of a singing career, she competed in numerous contests, including competitions at the Monterey County and Salinas V
alley fairs, losing only one of them. She also auditioned for such shows as 'X Factor,' 'Star Search,' 'America's Got Talent' and 'Your Big Break.' But she never heard back from them and has decided to close that door. She felt her age worked against her in those competitions. Country music, she said, doesn't frown on a person's age.'We are just people and country is about real people,' she said. 'I've always loved country but I never pursued it until my thirties.'While she has a big library of her own works, she wanted to start fresh for her debut album, which will include 10
songs. Papps, a guitar player, contributes to the
songwriting process, too. 'He's a beautiful melodic creator and co-writer in most of my stuff,' Rose said. She has chosen seven of the 10
songs for her album and will write three more. She writes her
lyrics with pen and paper and keeps 'a sm
all girly sort of notebook' in her purse for writing. If she gets an idea and can't write it down she'll record it on her phone.Rose said she writes in spurts. 'Usu
ally I won't say I'm going to write a
song. Something triggers it. It happens
all the time. ... I get inspired by things in life.' She's even had
songs come to her in dreams. Her proposed album title
song, 'Ride on Your Horses,' is a metaphor that she believes people will love. 'It's about being your own warrior, your own knight, your own rescuer ..., to go forward and fight for yourself.'Rose's long-term goal is to become a famous and successful independent singer-
songwriter so that she's not bound by a contract.'If a major label wanted to sign me, I'm not saying I wouldn't do it,' she said. 'But I had contracts when I was younger and they were holding me back from greater opportunities. So next time I am given the option to sign a contract it would have to be a real recording contract.'Through her music, Rose also wants to do good things for others in her life. She said she wants to be a success not only for herself but for her fans and family, especi
ally her 90-year-old grandmother, who has been a strong supporter.'With an album done,' she said, 'the (music) industry can see what I'm capable of. From there there's no limit.'With a little financial help from donors, Rose will be on the way to achieving her dreams.'I have some strange feeling in my gut for the first time in my life that I've actu
ally got my foot in the door,' she said.
